Credit Unions – Something To Be Thankful For

Credit unions are definitely something to be thankful for. With lower fees, better interest rates, and great customer service, credit unions give banks a run for their money.

  1. I have been a member of a credit union since about 1975. At the time a branch was onsite where I worked. If I needed a loan or any other business I would call Jim and he would say stop by at lunch and sign the papers. Even now 35 years later and living an hour from the nearest branch I do all my banking online and on occasion go to a branch to cash a check I don’t want to send through the mail. I have applied for car loans on the phone and always get the best rates. I applied for a credit card recently through the credit union because I was not satisfied with the “big brother” feeling of the larger companies. I have always felt a personal contact with the credit union and have no desire to look else where. By the way atm withdrawals are free all over the world.
I will admit that the small town bank where we now live is the closest in personal attention and caring I have seen and this is a bank that did not any bailout money.

    1. Thanks for your comment Jeff! Obviously you have had a great personal experience with your credit union. The personal service there sounds very nice. And free ATM withdrawals? That’s great too!

  2. While Credit Unions might provide some advantages around fees and rates, you generally lose out on some of the best benefits of a larger financial instituion. For example, how is the on-line experience with a Credit Union compared to a large financial instituion? All-in-one banking is much harder at a credit union, not to mention connecting it to mortgages, credit cards, investments, etc. There are many value-added services larger instituions provide that credit unions can’t come close to touching because they don’t have the size and scope. You get what you pay for, and if the value proposition suits your needs better at a large financial instituion, then in the end it might actually be better.

    1. Dave, you are right. Larger banks in general seem to offer a more robust portfolio of online banking services, loans & investments. However, I am seeing some larger credit unions doing a pretty good job on those things too (check out http://www.macu.com for an example). It just depends on what you need from your banking institution.
